The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, a stunning showpiece for orchestra, is designed to acquaint young people with the characters of the various instruments and instrumental choirs that make up the modern orchestra using a theme and variations. Each variation has different character—some tender, some slightly sarcastic, some mysterious, some straightforwardly humorous—all with great originality and good humor. In the final section, Britten puts his fragmented orchestra back together in a grand and festive style.
